Start Blogging

Hello Class,

Some of you may be blogging pros, while I know others are blogging novices.

If you are here, clearly you already read and followed the instructions from Module 1 on blogging. The first assignment states:

Remember, the point of journaling is to convey your ideas about what you are learning, but since you are in an academic format, it should be substantiated by the information that you are exposed to in this course. It does not matter if you like or dislike something; what matters is why you feel the way you do and what lead you in the sources you reviewed to feel that way.

1. Write a 250 word minimum piece of writing that can be used in a blog post. Your writing must document and describe one of the web resources in Module 01 and tell us, the reader what you have learned from it. Do not assume that all of your readers are familiar with the resource. Here is a good link for composing a quality academic journal post: http://faculty.weber.edu/kmackay/academic_journal.htm

So have fun, be creative, load pictures, link important websites. Although this is an academic exercise, I prefer that you explore your creative side, express yourself freely.

Enjoy.

  2. Soo Tribe is your peeps? This must be a great experience. I would like to know more about this. Obviously you are part of the tribe but can others visit and participate in the Soo rituals? I have been considering visiting a reservation if it is allowed and I would feel welcomed. If I would be looked at in a negative light, than naturally I wouldn't do it. How are you accepted into the tribe as you don't live on the reservation I assume? Do they look differently at those who live on the reservation than those who do not? I am assuming that you have to be invited? I wouldn't think that anyone can just walk in and say, "I'm Here"? When you go to these events, what is the breakdown of folks who live off the reservation? In other words, is it 50/50, 90/10, etc? Seems like a great experience!

    1. Hi Anthony,
Technically I'm a member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians but even their website is sootribe (French Influence). You can actually walk right through the rez here, join in the Pow Wow and be welcome. You cannot walk into the membership building and get a card :-)
One of our reservations in the Sault looks just like a suburb / neighborhood and you drive through it to get to the Pow Wow. Pretty much if someone didn't tell you it was the rez it'd just look like housing ... but that is what a reservation is, a place for us to live. Few people look differently on those that live on or off the rez (because it's hard to really know). Pow Wows are celebrations created to attract outsiders to educate, to celebrate, and of course to bring in outside monies (gotta eat). Finally msg me at nnesberg@ufl.edu or FB friend me if you want to chat more! Oh, I summer with my people every summer so I'll be on/by the rez for the next few weeks if you want me to take a video / explain more. Nicole

  3. I have been reading about the Haudenosaunee or the People of the Long House. I believe the statements that have been spoken by the Great Orator and Faith keeper Oren Lyons. He speaks of the time when the Great Confederation was in control and powerful. He spoke of the way the people need to live and how they needed to grow. He spoke of the way that the elderly should be treated with respect. He also spoke on how the young should be taken care of and taught and shown how to correct the transgressions that all young people have a tendency to do. This was in the year 1993 in front of the United Nations. This was perhaps one of the most significant orations that could be given to the elites of the world in which Oren Lyons was subjugating these important personnel with questions of what is right and what can be done to safeguard the upcoming generations of the world from our own folly. He is imploring the world leaders to make the waters safe to drink. To make it easier to breath by taking away all of the smoke and smog that is prevalent in today’s society around the world. He is asking for world recognition of all native tribes and or nations that inhabit the Turtle Island called North America. He is asking for respect for his people and all peoples world wide. I would like all of our younger generations to see what a difference that can be made by you. For clear understanding of values given to us by such great men as Oren Lyons. I would like to see the time when all world leaders recognize the fact that we as a people of all colors and creeds, religions and ideals can come together to make a difference in our society to keep the values of our people safe in perpetuity. I think that we as a society whether from the U.S. to Europe to Asia need to be aware of the amount of harm that we are creating to our home, to our young, and to generations to come.
